Winter dry skin is something I’ve had to deal with all my life.
The bone dry air makes my skin shrivel up and look dead and dull – nobody needs that in their life. (alongside blackheads)
I’ve researched a ton of different ways to remedy winter dry skin, and these are the methods I’ve found that actually helped a ton when it comes to curing winter dry skin.
Let’s start with the home or apartment.
One of the biggest reasons winter drys out your skin like crazy is because of the bone dry air in the environment.
To combat this, you must get a humidifier.
I highly recommend opting for a warm mist humidifier as it does not get dirty or make the room feel clammy like a cold mist humidifier.
Here’s one I highly recommend: Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier
8 Ways To Beat Winter Dry Skin
Now you might be asking: How do I keep my skin healthy, moisturized and supple during the winter?
With these 8 ways, you’re sure to keep your skin smooth and healthy and full of life!
1) Avoid Hot Baths & Long Hot Showers
Yes, I get it, long hot showers are basically the best part of winter, but they’re super drying to your skin. The water and heat strip the oils from your skin that are naturally keeping you moisturized. This becomes even harsher if you live in an area with hard water.
2) Exfoliate! Gently.
Exfoliating will remove the dead skin that drys out more often and replace it with healthy skin. Of course you want to be very gentle with exfoliating, especially on the face, opt for a chemical exfoliating.
3) Drink Water.
There is a big difference between dry skin vs dehydrated skin.
If you don’t drink enough water your skin won’t have anything to keep it hydrated and thus your skin will look dry but even a heavy moisturizer won’t do much for you.
Drink your water!
4) Omega-3 Fatty Acids
A lot of people lack healthy fats in their diets which actually can have a negative effect on your skin.
A supplement like fish-oil has been shown to help with chronically dry lips and eyes. If you suffer from winter dry lips and eyes, try this!
5) Don’t Over-wash Face & Hands
Washing with harsh soaps (especially hand soaps) are brutally drying on your hands. Avoid over washing your hands and face, and always try and have a hand repair cream handy, they help a lot.
6) Chronically Dry Lips? Try this.
If you suffer from chapped lips all winter long, try this simple routine.
- Apply a thick layer of Aquaphor at night
- In the morning, gently exfoliate your lips with a damp towel
- Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor
7) Sulfate-Free Toothpaste
Regular toothpastes are notorious for drying out the lips and mouth area because of the harsh chemicals they have.
Get yourself a sulfate free toothpaste like Toms.
8) Apply a heavy moisturizer every night
Every night before you go to sleep, slather your face with some heavy moisturizer.
I recommend: Cerave (in the tub)
By the time you wake up, your skin will have absorbed all of it and you will have healthy skin, hydrated, skin!
